- The right bowl makes the difference — the wide-mouth chawan gives the whisk room to move properly. A narrow cup doesn't work the same way
- 80-prong chasen — more prongs mean smoother emulsification. This is the grade used in traditional tea ceremony
- The sifter is not optional — matcha clumps. A sifter takes 10 seconds and prevents the most common mistake beginners make
- The scoop measures 1 tsp — the chashaku is sized to give you a consistent dose without guessing
- Bamboo, not plastic — sustainable, traditional, and it doesn't pick up flavours over time
Bamboo whisk (chasen): Rinse under warm water immediately after use. Never use soap. Never put it in a dishwasher. Stand upright or rest on a whisk holder to dry completely. A well-cared-for chasen lasts 6–12 months of daily use.
Ceramic bowl (chawan): Hand-wash with mild dish soap. Dry completely before storing — the wide base means it air-dries easily.
Bamboo sifter & scoop: Wipe clean with a dry cloth after each use. Avoid soaking either piece in water.
Bamboo tools are not dishwasher-safe — the heat warps the wood and degrades the fibres quickly.
